What is AR? Accelerated Reader (AR) is a reading manage program that allows teachers to monitor all forms of guided reading practice. It provides deatield date for target instruction and its goal is to ensure reading success.

The first step in the AR process is to have a student complete the STAR test (a different program) to assess the student's independent reading level. From there, studetns can choose and read books from their level. The students are told to read the book carefully. If it's a shorter book, I encourage my students to read it twice. They then take a comprehension test consisting of five to ten questions. They get immediate results, with a percentage and points earned.

The strengths of the program are the appropriate difficulty levels. Grade level standards are covered through the comprehension and analysis standard. Once the students are trained on the program, minimal assistance is needed with students. The instructions are clear and concise. AR is a useful record keeping component and it provides motivation for studetns.

One of the weaknesses of the program is the need for the STAR program. You could tweak to find out the reading level of your students, but it ismuch smoother to begin with STAR testing. A lot of time is required when beginning the program. You have to set up your classroom library, label all your books, figure out if you have quizzes for them, and teach the kids how to use AR. Teachers also need to be trained with the program and it requires constant monitoring to ensure students are meeting goals and passing tests.

At Baden-Powell, we hagve a point system in place. Student receive prize tags beginnign at five points. Announcements are made and studetns are recognized for reaching certain milestones. Students also have personal goals to reach: independent reader, rising reader, etc. They also have point level goals each trimester.

My students love the program and I have found it to be a great motivational tool. It's easy to use once it's set up, and I highly recommend it.
